Chisenhale Gallery is one of London’s most innovative galleries for contemporary visual art, promoting national and international developments in visual culture through its ambitious commissioning of solo exhibitions and a newly established programme of public events including performances, film screenings and talks. Chisenhale Gallery is dedicated to increasing access to the visual arts through its’ artist-led, community and schools education programme.

Chisenhale Gallery has a long-term reputation for producing innovative solo commissions with artists often at a formative stage in their career. In the 1990s Chisenhale Gallery produced exhibitions with artists such as Rachel Whiteread, Cornelia Parker, Gillian Wearing, Sam Taylor Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, Paul Noble, Pipilotti Rist, Peter Friedl and Thomas Hirschorn and more recently with Marine Hugonnier, Olaf Breuning, Mai-Thu Perret, Rosalind Nashashibi, Lucy Skaer and Jaki Irvine.

The gallery currently produces up to five solo exhibitions each year. Artists are given a platform to make ambitious new work in response to the gallery’s unique space, a converted factory of 2,500 square feet. The exhibitions, events and education programmes are currently being developed to include a series of programmes that will host a diverse range of local and international artists, curators and writers, and will establish ongoing collaborations with local and international arts organisations as well as engaging with a wide range of local community groups.

Chisenhale Gallery occupies a renovated 1930s veneer factory on Chisenhale Road located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The veneer factory and Godson’s brewery industrial buildings have been occupied by three organisations Chisenhale Gallery, Chisenhale Dance Space and Chisenhale Art Place Trust (CAPT) sine 1980.

Chisenhale Gallery is a fixed revenue client of Arts Council England. The programme is fundraised for in entirety through funding bodies, sponsors, trusts and foundations and private benefactors. Chisenhale Gallery often collaborates with arts agencies and other organisations to co-produce projects.

Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a major solo exhibition by Florian Hecker, hisfirst in a UK public institution, comprising a newly commissioned sound piece presented
at Chisenhale Gallery, London and IKON Gallery, Birmingham. Hecker explores old and
new systems of creating and working with sound, employing idiosyncratic psychoacoustic
propositions in order to examine and disrupt spatial perception. Working in performance,
studio and installation, the artist frequently collaborates with academic researchers in
auditory perception and computer music, as well as with other artists such as Russell
Haswell, Carsten Höller and Cerith Wyn Evans.

Hecker’s new commission for Chisenhale Gallery continues his exploration of sound in
relation to the body, architecture and perceived space. Here, the artist will present a series
of four independent, computer generated, sound works. These pieces will be installed so as
to create a parcours that will lead the visitor around the gallery space.

Carefully choreographed, each work will generate over time, creating various auditory
configurations that, at moments, coalesce into a single overall sonic environment. The
display of loudspeakers – either suspended from the ceiling on metal rods or wall-mounted
– creates an amalgamation of auditory and visual perception, instating an invisible
architecture within the gallery, where boundaries are demarcated by the transitions
between one sound work and another.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of talks and events and Hecker has
produced a limited edition print specially for Chisenhale Gallery.

Hecker was born in 1975 in Kissing, Germany. He has presented his work internationally
including most recently at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009);The Morning Line, Youniverse,
3 Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla, Spain; Mori Art Musuem,
Tokyo, Japan; Manifesta 7, South Tyrol, Italy, 2008; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville,
Paris, France, 2006. Forthcoming exhibitions for 2009-10 include BAWAG Contemporary,
Vienna, Austria; Evento, Bordeaux, France; and MMK: Museum of Modern Art,
Frankfurt, Germany.

Hecker is also a regular performer and has an extensive discography including Haswell &
Hecker, Blackest Ever Black, Warner Classics (2007) and his most recent release Acid in
the Style of David Tudor, Editions Mego (2009).

For the Summer Chisenhale Gallery hosts 27 Senses, an exhibition curated by Lina Dzuverovic and produced by Electra. 27 Senses is a group exhibition arriving at Chisenhale Gallery from the Norwegian fjords, based around the participating artists’ investigation into a forgotten moment in the life of seminal artist Kurt Schwitters.

Emerging out of a research trip in 2007 to the Schwitters Hütte - a small hut on the remote island of Hjertøya that the artist inhabited and transformed during his exile from Germany in the 1930s – the project developed in close dialogue with a unique site. Yet in its own subjective and heavily abstracted way, 27 Senses stretches beyond locality and speaks also of the very abandonment of a place. In focus here is the idea of stopping and starting, the notion that Schwitters was forced to rebuild his life (and the Merzbau) several times due to the political situation that led to his exile from Germany to Norway and subsequently to the UK. The geopolitical conditions the artist had to navigate continuously induced as well as restricted movement, making the relationship with place fluid and temporary.

Ideas of leaving behind and starting anew remain central to the new reincarnation of 27 Senses, a move that coincides with Schwitters’ own journey from Norway to the UK in the summer of 1940. This transition is one where the artists involved in the first chapter of the exhibition will continue their dialogue with Schwitters in ways that stretch beyond historical specificity to a more intuitive and personal engagement with both a specific place and movement.

For Chisenhale, the five artists who took part in the initial 27 Senses exhibition at Kunstmuseet KUBE in 2009 will recontextualise works created in response to the visit to Schwittershutte on Hjertoya island as well as creating some pieces.
