“Metal in Motion - Sculpture by Tony Evans”
Exhibition: 14th September - 16h October 2009.
From mid September, dot-art is delighted to be hosting a collection of sculptural works and drawings by the celebrated local artist Tony Evans. He is perhaps best known for his piece “Inspiration”, a huge winged horse commissioned by Liverpool Community College for their Myrtle Street centre in December 2008.
Tony specialises in animals in action using mainly copper and bronze (often recycled) and the work is a result of hours of intense concentration and physical effort. His portrayals of nature capture the spirit and the splendour of a whole menagerie of animals ranging from the simplicity of a frog to the magnificence of a life size Bengal tiger.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Tony worked for The Prudential for over 30 years before he turned to his long suppressed passion for art. At age 55 he attended Liverpool Community College where he achieved GCSE and A Levels and subsequently emerged from Wirral Metropolitan College aged 58 with a B.A. Honours Degree in Fine Art.
Since then, the artist has enjoyed huge success, with work on permanent display at The Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport and in many private collections. As well as successful local and national exhibitions, he has also been awarded a number of high profile commissions.
Tony describes the physical and emotional process of creating the work;
"After seeing in my minds eye the split second movement that I want to catch, I go through the excitement of the potential in the basic maquette and armature, satisfaction at the building and assembling stage to eventual resignation and acceptance that while it may be close to what I want, it is far short of the grace, speed or ferocity of the original concept. This, however, is what spurs me on to start again on the next sculpture. "
All work is for sale. Admission is free.
The exhibition is open to the public at dot-art, 16 Queen Avenue, Castle Street, 12-6pm Monday – Friday and by appointment, from Monday 14th September to Friday 16th October. Please see www.dot-art.com or call 0845 0176660 for more details.

Exhibition 26th October - 27th November 2009.
dot-art is delighted to announce an exhibition of new paintings by professional artist Alice Lenkiewicz, which form a social commentary on Liverpools night-life and drinking culture. More than 8% of Liverpool’s population are drinking at levels that will lead to them significantly harming their physical and mental health and that of others, and this show questions whether we have moved on as a society since similar concerns over “binge drinking” in the 18th century.
“Gin Lane, Liverpool” was inspired by the subject matter of the 18th century artist, William Hogarth who drew people on the streets and studied the drinking culture of the time which led to him creating a series of works based on so called 'modern moral subjects'. Later important prints include his pictorial warning of the unpleasant consequences of alcoholism in Beer Street and Gin Lane (1751).
Alice took her cue from Hogarth as she recognised striking parallels with our own contemporary city:
“I decided because of the effect of drinking culture on our present society that it would be interesting to do something similar so I went out to draw people from all walks of life, drinking and socialising at night and turned these into oil paintings and further studies. I went into various popular venues, pubs, clubs in Liverpool ... Sometimes I would draw inside the clubs or create paintings of specific street scenes. I concentrated mainly on local pubs around Toxteth and Dingle as well as in the city centre and surrounding areas, particularly Mathew Street, Bold Street, Clayton Square and Slater Street. Sometimes it was quite ghostly as I felt as if nothing had changed from Hogarth's time on the social scene.”
“This project taught me that night-life culture is very important for allowing people to express themselves and to have fun but it is also important that people are fully educated of the problems that arise from over abuse of alcohol and drink dependency. I noticed many people who were not consuming vast amounts of alcohol and some who did not need it at all. This sets a role model for enjoyment without the need for self abuse or abuse towards others.”
Peter Borsay, a researcher at Aberystwyth University, said in a recent interview with the BBC that claims that problem drinking is indicative of a broken society are no different now to in the 18th century, with the main difference being the media hype surrounding the issue today:
"At first glance, the parallels between the 18th century gin craze and contemporary binge-drinking appear striking. But it is not drinking behaviour that merits the comparison, but the moral panics that characterised both periods, fuelled by pressure groups, the media and perceptions of government complacency."
Alice Lenkiewicz is a practising artist and poet who lives in Liverpool with her two daughters. She was born in 1964 and brought up in Plymouth. From an early age she was interested in writing and art. Her father, the controversial artist, Robert Lenkiewicz introduced her to an eclectic world of painting, fairytales and books on the occult as she grew up. These experiences have always initiated her own interests in the esoteric, magical realism and popular culture, inspiring her to pursue her individual style and voice in Art and Poetry. She later studied these subjects in more depth at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, gaining a BA hons in Art & Design and English as well as an MA in Writing Studies.

January - 5th March 2010
dot-art's
first show of 2010 showcases the work of talented Liverpool artist
Michael Kirby, who has produced a series of paintings, not just about
decay as depicted literally in these works, but concerned with human
decay, both physical and spiritual. Do we really think about the
future, about death and what that means to us as individuals?
Michael
was born in Liverpool in 1956, he studied Graphic Design and
Illustration at Wigan school of Art, but after two years he decided
to leave and moved to London where he worked as a freelance
Illustrator. In a career spanning 25 years he has worked for most of
the major advertising agencies in the capital.
Since
moving back to Liverpool in 2002 he has concentrated on developing
his painting. His main interests are landscape, whether urban or
country and the depiction of the human figure. His main influences
are Sargent, Alfred Munnings and Lucien Freud.
Michael
says the following about these thought provoking paintings:
“The
world deteriorates, humanity decays, but do we consider the
consequences? We see this deterioration every day in the fabric of
our inner city structures. We give such significance to them, yet
they all fall away to nothing. The series, by using buildings as a
focal point, aims to ignite a thought process: a thought process that
will lead to the suggestion of there being something more permanent
than this finite existence.”
All
work is for sale. Admission is free.

dot-art.com Presents:
Paul Shiers – Translucence and Saturation, 15th March - 23rd April 2010
dot-art's Spring show features a new collection of abstract work by Wirral based painter Paul Shiers. These vibrant, dramatic and multi-layered works embrace a variety of media and techniques, exploiting the possibilities and qualities of acrylic paint but also introducing elements of enamel, oil and watercolour for specific effects.
It is Paul's opinion that abstract art is the most free form of painting on canvas. Forming ideas for paintings from a variety of different sources, he enjoys the experimental side of painting using lots of different techniques to gain a satisfactory conclusion to a piece of work. He says this of the inspiration behind his work:
“In the world we find ourselves today, there are images everywhere. Just seeing the way that two colours are placed together anywhere in nature or artificially can spark the beginnings of an idea which forms the basis of a painting. Most of the time I am not trying to paint something that exists, but rather to paint something that is totally unique. Image making can be performed much more satisfactorily by a camera.”
Translucence and saturation are the most important parts of the painting. The composition is often of secondary importance as the artist attempts to make each layer see through to the next and yet come through on its own.
All work is for sale. Admission is free.

“Synthesis of Recollection”
An exhibition of new work by Frank Linnett - 21st June - 30th July 2010
Frank is a well established Liverpool based artist, who has been exhibiting regionally and nationally for over 25 years. This series of new oil paintings, entitled “Synthesis of Recollection” and shown for the first time at dot-art, continues to explore the artist's ongoing interest in combining real and imagined worlds and experiences.
The series of ten paintings are based on things experienced, bringing together elements of the natural landscape and man-made structures that have been recalled and reconfigured through a synthesis of observation and imagination.
Frank talks about his working process and subject matter:
"Working on the premise that all things are useful when decanting influences into a visual form, allows me to exploit a variety of disparate subject matter for my own ends. It is important that there are visible references to real things in my painting even if they in themselves do not reflect a definite reality. Everything goes into the mix and is made visible on the canvas. Hence there are references to historical events and hints at social comment and contemporary issues; straightforward studies from the everyday and of imaginary landscapes. Each of these is a response to what has happened or is happening and can be linked on a subconscious level to the need to react to an impulse."
All work is for sale. Admission is free.
