Description

Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard, who celebrated its 20th birthday last year, continues to serve aspiring contemporary artists to this day.

Since our opening in New York in 2009 with the creation of Galerie Richard Inc., we have acquired prestige and importance in both European and American art scenes. This has allowed us to increase the recognition of the gallery and to expand the market for our artists. We anticipate the opening of a gallery in New York by winter 2010.

Although we are already one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in Paris, the gallery will undergo renovations emphasize the quality of the space to attract the most influential international visitors. Furthermore, we are developing a graphic identity in the form of a new website that will appear in a few months time.

Compared with our peers, Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard (ex Galerie OZ), has always distinguished itself by choosing artists on an international scale. For many years, French artists represented a mere 10% of our program. Currently, 20% of the artists that we represent are French artists, such as Alain Kirili, who was welcomed into the gallery in 2009, and Chafik Gasmi, in 2010. Half of our artists live and work in the United States and we are their sole representatives in Europe. Thus, our collectors also share a relation between the United States, France, and other European countries.

Since 2003, the gallery has built an original programme that focuses on the revival of painting in the United States, which is often influenced by new technology. Benjamin Edwards, Shirley Kaneda, Beverly Fishman, Carl Fudge, Joseph Nechvatal, Pedro Barbeito, Paul Henry Ramirez, as well as artists from Los Angeles and Las Vegas, such as Tim Bavington, David Ryan, Yek, Adam Ross, Linda Besemer, have contributed to the international reputation of the gallery.

With the addition of Christoph Wedding, Sven-Ole Frahm and Marcus Sendlinger, the gallery represents young German abstract painting. We have followed the figurative European painters such as Christophe Avella-Bagur, Stefan Hoenerloh, Alice Stepanek and Steven Maslin and Hervé Heuzé for years. Additionally, as a French-Japanese gallery, we have introduced many major Asian artists in Europe, such as the Japanese artists Kyoshi Nakagami and Risa Sato and the Korean artists Choi Jeong Hwa and Bae Bien-U.

The gallery’s programme has evolved in three directions: a growth of artists from one generation to the next, a broadening of many forms of artistic expression, and a strengthening of relations with public art institutions and a commitment to the production of works of art.

1/ By choice, we have remained a gallery for emerging artists, for the most part. We have added two young artists to the program : Chafik Gasmi and the Iranian-Austrian couple Daryoush Asgar & Elisabeth Gabriel. Nevertheless, we will develop further the representation of artists who desire higher international recognition. Since 2009, we are proud to represent Ron Gorchov, Judy Pfaff and Alain Kirili in Europe.

2/ Olaf Rauh is a photographer, Joseph Nechvatal combines video and digital painting, Ron Gorchov has introduced tri-dimensionality in painting, while Linda Besemer takes it further with her wall sculptures made in acrylic. Alain Kirili, who is a sculptor, brought this medium to the gallery. Finally, with the addition of Judy Pfaff, the largest historic representative of installation art and Chafik Gasmi, whose light installations expand in space, the gallery offers its exhibition space to artists who wish to fully express themselves.

3/ Until recently, the gallery sold works almost exclusively to private collectors. Due to the progressive recognition of our emerging artists receive and due to our new program of established artists, the gallery strengthened its relations with public museums and other such institutions. Through these artists , we broaden our services and participate in the production of artworks if necessary.

Knowing the history of art and that of the major galerists, one understands that the rhythm of art is a long, process in contrast with the short rhythm of what is hype. It is through this perspective that we find our role in the international art world.

Today, the gallery has the capacity to represent different generations of artists in many different stages of their careers. This allows us to blend our loyalty to our artists and our artistic sensibility.
